USS Constellation was a nominally rated38-gun wooden-hulled, three-mastedfrigate of the United States Navy. She wasbuilt under the direction of David Stodderat The Joseph and Samuel Sterett shipyardon Harris Creek in Baltimore’s Fell’s Pointmaritime community, and she was launchedon 7 September 1797. She was one of theoriginal six frigates whose constructionthe Naval Act of 1794 had authorized. The name Constellation was among tennames submitted to President GeorgeWashington by Secretary of War TimothyPickering in March of 1795 for the frigatesthat were to be constructed. The Flag Actof 1777 speaks of how the stars in the flagare representing a new constellation.
