High-End Reference CD player. What is lost can never be recovered...
This is why the music source is of such big importance. If signals are
lost in the reading process it can never be repaired by a good amplifier
or a loudspeaker. The process of reading a CD seems quite simple at
first, but it requires very precise timing and the weak signal can very
easily be distorted. If you get these factors under control you are well
on your way to a NATURAL and DYNAMIC sounding system. A system that
brings you closer to the performers. The CDP4A is all that. Thanks to
the Hegel CD-Drive mechanism with redesigned servo motors and perfectly
synchronized timing throughout the digital domain. In a CD player one of the most important
parts is the master clock signal. The master clock is controlling the
rhythm of the CD player by telling the DAC chip exactly when to convert
the audio signal from digital to analog. To have the best possible
sound, it is vital to have a master clock that has a very stable clock
frequency and lowest possible jitter. Jitter is timing errors in clock
generator circuits. A master clock generator should have a very stable
time period. If the timing period of the master clock generator is
moving back and forth in time this timing error is called jitter. Jitter
for a clock generator is measured in pico seconds, and the number of
pico seconds of timing jitter is a measure for the quality of the clock
To have the best possible sound, it is
best to have a lowest possible jitter value. All Hegel CD players have
less than 10 pico seconds of jitter. There are many mechanisms that can
generate jitter in a master clock generator: power supply noise, clock
oscillator topology, quality of quartz crystal resonator, clock driver
circuit and circuit board layout. Most CD players are using a master
clock located at the CD servo-decoder board in the CD player. Because
the servo-decoder board has got a lot of high- and low frequency noise
from the CD servos and the digital CD decoder circuits this is not a
good solution. A Master Clock generator on the CD servo-decoder board
will have an unstable frequency and high jitter because of the high
levels of signal noise and power supply noise on this board.
In addition to having the Master Clock
generator on the CD servo-decoder board, many CD players are also using a
SPDIF serial digital interface from the CD servo-decoder board to the
DAC-board, and this will give decreased sound quality because of digital
audio data related jitter. The most expensive CD systems are using a
separate Master clock generator that is connected to the CD
servo-decoder and to the DAC board. This is an expensive solution, but
will always give the best sound. All Hegel CD players are using a very
high precision Master clock generator with extremely low jitter, and
this Master clock generator is located on the DAC board inside the CD
players. This high precision Master clock is distributed directly to the
DAC chip and directly to the CD servo-decoder board. In this way the
performance of the Hegel master clock generator is equivalent to very
expensive CD systems. Good recordings are best enjoyed naked.

from person to person, details change. Things are added, others lost. At
some point, the story has changed. When a music signal is passing
through an audio amplifier a similar effect will take place. As the
signal is passed from stage to stage within the audio amplifier, the
music signal will be changed by every single amplifier stage. When the
music signal finally reaches your loudspeakers, the signal is different
from the original music signal from the signal source. The Hegel
SoundEngine local error cancelling system prevents distortion in the
audio amplifier circuit stages, preserving the original details and the
dynamic range in the original music signal. The end result is a much
cleaner music signal with a larger dynamic range and lower distortion.
The unique and patented Hegel
SoundEngine audio technology is combining the advantage of class
AB-amplifier and the advantage of class A-amplifiers, without having the
draw backs of class A and class AB-amplifier technologies. The
SoundEngine Technology will cancel crossover distortion found in all
types of class-AB amplifiers. The human ear is very sensitive to high
frequency distortion components in the music signal. The Hegel
SoundEngine technology will cancel high frequency distortion components
found in normal types of audio amplifiers. The Hegel SoundEngine
technology is not using any kind of global negative feedback, it is
using local and adaptive feed forward technology if there should ever be
any need for cancellation of distortion within the audio amplifier
stages. Almost all HiFi CD Players today are
using asynchronous upsampling to convert digital audio data to analog
audio. Hegel found that using this kind of asynchronous converter
technology will convert jitter error into amplitude error, giving less
than optimal sound quality. The Hegel CD Players are using a new digital
to analog conversion technology called synchronised upsampling. This
new technology gives higher resolution and less distortion, giving a
high sound quality. The SynchroDAC technology is used together with the
Direct MasterClock technology to keep jitter error and digital to analog
conversion errors to a minimum. This will give a cleaner sound and a
higher resolution than normal CD Player DAC technology.
The syncroDAC converter technology is
using true balanced signal processing to preserve highest possible
dynamic range and to reduce distortion. Hegel has done a lot of research
to be able to design the DAC converter boards in-house to convert the
digital audio data into high resolution analog audio from the CDs. To be
able to design the CD DAC converter boards in the best possible way
requires a lot of deep technical knowledge in the fields of low noise
analog electronics, high frequency electronics, signal processing
electronics and advanced circuit board layout techniques. We are proud
to say that we are one of the very few manufacturers on the market with
capability of designing a CD-Player on this level from the ground up.
The benefits for you are obvious; a fully integrated design in more
DURABLE, and it SOUNDS BETTER. Hegel CDP4A has a digital output that can
be used to connect it to a separate D/A-converter, like the HD10. Both
our CD-Players are controlled by only two buttons on the front panel, or
via the supplied system remote control unit. The 2-button design and
our nicely curved front panel even gave us the Norwegian Design Councils
Award for design excellence. It looks GOOD. It sounds NATURAL. It's
truly SCANDINAVIAN. The difference between the CDP4A and CDP2A:
The CDP4A is using a more advanced audio board than the CDP2A. It has
more precise components and a more complex power supply. The CDP4A is
using the new and more precise HEGEL master clock 2 with an extremely
low jitter level. Altogether the CDP4A will have a larger dynamic range,
a lower colouration and better analogue outputs than the CDP2A.
